The saying "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" means that the value, effectiveness, or power of a whole system, entity, or group is significantly more than what you'd expect by simply adding up the values of its individual parts. In essence, the interaction and combination of parts produce a result that is greater than the sum of their individual contributions. We aim to engage the whole community sector to collaborate and build strength together.
Examples:
Synergy:
A team of individuals working together can achieve more than each person working alone due to the combined effect of their skills and efforts.
Gestalt Psychology:
This psychological theory emphasizes that the perception of a whole is more than the sum of its individual parts, meaning that we perceive things as integrated wholes rather than just collections of elements.
Complex Systems:
In complex systems, like the human body, the combined functioning of organs and systems is more than the sum of their individual operations. The body's overall function (e.g., maintaining homeostasis) is different from the individual objectives of its cells.
Chemistry:
Certain chemical reactions can produce a new substance with properties different from and more valuable than those of the individual reactants.
Music:
A musical piece composed by combining different melodies and harmonies can create a greater emotional impact than the individual melodies or harmonies alone.

Our Culture
How we might like the community to work…
We value ourselves as part of the creative community.
We all have different but equally valuable experiences and views.
It’s important to
say if we feel uncomfortable or uneasy about anything
be non-judgemental or be too quick to jump to conclusions
communicate with and support each other
be well prepared - PPPPP - perfect planning prevents poor performance
have reasonable and realistic expectations of each other
be aware of our own boundaries and have respect for others
work towards our common goals
It’s good to
try to our best to set the right example
support each other - as part of the community and as individuals
be responsible for, and manage our own emotions
communicate as well as we can
try and include everyone in the challenges
be polite, respectful and good mannered
try and use inclusive and positive language as much as we can
get things off your chest
accommodate differences - it can only make us stronger
try and keep things light-hearted and enjoy ourselves
It’s ok to
express how we feel about things
make slower progress than we’d like
feel frustrated from time to time
ask for clarification of someone elses point of view
make mistakes if your hearts in the right place
ask obvious questions
not know all the right answers
experiment with good intentions
